The South Side Ballroom — Dallas, TX

November 2, 2024

Being a fan of Dayglow since the Fuzzybrain days I was excited to be able to see him in Dallas, TX at the South Side Ballroom. I was ecstatic as I entered the venue, especially because I had to miss his tour last year. I was ready to experience everything Dayglow had to offer and he did not disappoint. He was excited to be there smiling ear to ear the entire show, a homecoming of sorts. He reminisced with the crowd and talked about how he grew up in Fort Worth and would frequently visit the same venue he was now performing at. The rest of his band was full of Texans as well, being from Lubbock and Coppel in addition to Fort Worth. It allowed the audience to connect with the band in front of us, the reliability of living through similar experiences. As I looked around the crowd, it was full of people dancing and shouting when they’d hear the intro to their favorite song. He played not only songs from his most recent album released this past September but also incorporated a lot of his older songs, songs that brought this community to him in the first place. A lot of crowd participation and it made the experience much more intimate. A private community that is held so closely by the people within. And it was obvious that Dayglow held it just as closely as he interacted with the crowd, shouting out “Let’s Party Dallas!” and changing lyrics of songs to be specific to Dallas. The lights looked like little flowers and there was a giant star in the middle of the stage that would change colors to match the song. I thought it was really unique and allowed the experience to be more immersive. It was a fun night that I never wanted to end. As he leaves before the encore the crowd erupted in chants for him to run back up on stage. Once he did, he came out adorned in a white shirt with the words “Glow Star State,” a fun play on Texas’ famous title of “Lone Star State.” Dayglow made me forget about the stresses of life even if it was just for a few hours. Being there was surreal for me, and I felt like I was transported back in time, when I was younger and more carefree. Even though I was nervous about being alone, the crowd made me feel included at times I forgot that I was alone. I was able to join the crowd dancing and singing alone without feeling judged. Waves of appreciation and happiness washed over me during this show and I will remember this show forever. I hold Dayglow and his music so close to my heart and cannot wait to see what he does next.
